Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Flower Vase
This is a vintage pair of small brass metal flower vases, hanatate, for Buddhist altars. It is common to offer a range of seasonal and symbolic flowers in front of a Buddhist altar. It is also a vessel for Sakaki leaves or Shashagi leaves in Shinto. The meaning of offering sakaki tree leaves is that the gods living in the sakaki tree will protect the grave and the soul. These particular vases are very simple in design with no added embellishments or designs other than carved bands. They each can hold individual or very small collections of flowers.
