Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Drawer
This item comes from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This shallow, wide drawer is mostly coated in glossy classic black lacquer. The front contains intricate brass metal boarder embellishments along with an exquisite makie depiction of lotus blooms and leaves. There are raden (abalone shell) pieces for extra shimmer and detail.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
Acquired in an antique auction in Tajimi in Gifu, Japan.
