Antique Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print

This is a Japanese woodblock print Ukiyoe by Yoshitoshi Tukioka.  The title of the kanji characters say A battle in Osaka. This painting, a set of three ukiyo-e prints, depicts a scene where Goto Matahachi, carrying the young child "Kunimatsu," the son of Toyotomi Hideyori, in a white "horo" (a type of cloak), thrusts the famous spear "Nihongo" into a basket. On the left side, a hatamoto (a direct retainer of the Tokugawa shogunate) named Okubo Hikosaburo is depicted, brandishing a Japanese sword and rushing forward in haste. What's particularly intriguing is that, in reality, Tokugawa Ieyasu was concealed inside this basket. Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
