Antique Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print

This is a Japanese woodblock print Ukiyoe by Ikuhide Kobayashi. The title Kanji character says Seichu Gishin Meimei Kagami (誠忠義臣名々鏡). A large-format triptych depicting characters from the popular play 'Kanadehon Chushingura,' based on the revenge of the 47 Ronin of Ako, who attacked Kira's residence on December 14th in the 15th year of Genroku, successfully avenging their lord by killing Kira Kozukenosuke. This event is known as the 'Ako Incident.  Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
