Vtg Japanese Traditional Paddle Hagoita
This Japanese vintage wooden paddle is decorated with a three-dimensional fabric art (Oshie-Hagoita) of a woman or geisha in a kimono, also called hagoita. It shows a Japanese woman (geisha) dressed in a gorgeous dark blue, brown, blue, black and gold kimono with a bird and floral patterns. The woman holds a wooden bag. The woman wears the traditional hairdo and gorgeous red and gold kanzashi hairpins. The cloth part of the kimono is made of silk. The back of the paddle is painted with bamboo leaves and flowers (plum blossoms or sakura cherry blossoms). The handle is covered with a black velvet fabric. **Shuttlecocks are not included.
Hagoita is the wooden paddle used to hit shuttlecocks made of soapberry seeds and bird feathers. It is used to play the traditional Japanese pastime of Hanetsuki (Japanese badminton) during the New Year.
