Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Two Hanging Scrolls
Hand-crafted and in a light brown color, this unique, sturdy, and slender wooden box is made to store two hanging scrolls or kakejiku. The lid is step-top and fits flush together with the rest of the box. Inside are two wooden brackets used for securing a scroll in place. There is kanji writing on the inside of the lid with red stamps.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, and traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
