Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono in Japanese) features a portrait of Ono no Komachi, a famous Japanese poet from the Heian period. She is wearing a gorgeous red, green, and white layered kimono. On the right, there is a text titled 'Ono no Komachi'. This scroll is a reproduction of a famous illustrated handscroll. This piece is signed and has a red seal.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
