Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese boxed hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) is a portrait of Sugawara no Michizane, a politician of the Heian period. The man is dressed in a black kimono and is sitting under a matsu pine tree. The scroll is signed with a name and a red seal, and has inscriptions on the outside. The lid of the matching wooden box has inscriptions on the outside and the inside.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
