Japanese Shunga Ukiyoe Erotic Art Information Book
This is a Japanese art information book of erotic shunga woodblock prints by Hokusai. The Shunga reproductions in this book are from an antique Japanese Edo period art book of erotic shunga woodblock prints titled Azuma nishiki. The shunga depict love scenes of ordinary people in the Edo era, such as a young couple, a man and his concubine, a prostitute and a man, etc. The shunga also shows the dialogue between the couple at the scene. This book has an English explanation at the end.
Shunga is Japanese erotic art made traditionally by ukiyoe woodblock printing. Though these types of images and books are associated with general art as well as personal entertainment, the images in shunga were also used as an educational tool for youth and young married couples.
Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
