Japanese Shikishi Art Board

This vintage Japanese shikishi art board features an oshie-zaiku (Japanese patchwork) design of the white lion from the famous Kabuki dance Renjishi. This particular dance represents the power struggle between a father and son, the white lion as the aging father and the red lion as the strong son. Oshie-zaiku gives a unique 3D appearance, and different textures and patterns of silk fabric, and the addition of hair and other materials adds extra dimension.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper: calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
