Vintage Iron Branding Stamp
This is a vintage cast iron branding stamp called yaki-in. This piece is meant to be placed over fire or coals and is used to mark wood, leather, fabrics, and, most famously, Japanese sweets such as manju. It has the image of two curling ferns (warabi). Warabi is a plant that has many uses in Japanese food and crafts, such as for drying and making baskets to using the starch extracted from it to make traditional Japanese sweets called warabimochi.
