Vintage Japanese Woven Bamboo Hyotan Bell Keychain
This is a vintage Japanese woven bamboo hyotan gourd bell keychain or phone strap. The thin pieces of bamboo are woven in the mutsume-ami style (hexagonal) and dyed red. The metal bell is attached to a brown string that is threaded through the top of the gourd.
As a good luck charm, hyotan gourds symbolize the prosperity of descendants, preventing illness, and the success of a business. These gourds are also known to be hung at the entrance of a building with the lid off to protect entrants and the home from bad luck.
