Vtg Japanese Lacquered Wooden Shishi Lion Mask
This is a Japanese lacquered wooden shishi lion mask. Also called komainu, these lion dogs are often depicted as guardian statues outside of temples. They are also famous for shishi-mai, or lion dance (which has a Chinese equivalent). This gorgeous piece can be used for room decoration or shows and dances. The mouth opens and closes on a wooden frame and hinge attached to a string, and the ears are adjustable/removable. It has a long red silk fabric panel covering the back side. There are clusters of bells attached to either side of the back of the head. It comes in a paper box.
