Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, that features the jovial faces of Daikokuten on one side and Ebisu on the other. These two figures are Seven Lucky Gods (shichifukujin). Collectively they represent good fortune through commerce and business, as well as wealth. There is a deep orange string attached at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
