Antique Japanese Shinto Shrine Kamidana
This is an antique Japanese Shinto home shrine, or kamidana. It is a miniature shrine that is placed in Japanese homes and is believed to house a fragment or connection point to kami, or god of a shrine of the owner's choosing or affiliation of a business. These shrines are always placed above eye level and away from doorways or anywhere someone may walk under. It is also unanimously understood that kamidana be placed as the highest shelf in a room. Inside, they typically house various items such as shrine charm (ofuda) and a small round mirror (shinkyou) which acts as an item to attract the kami associated with the shrine.
This particular antique shrine is made entirely of wood with small, thin metal plate decoration on the doors. The door panel is removable for easy access to the inside. It comes with a carved wooden shinkyou mirror stand, but does not include the mirror. It has a flat back so it can be easily installed against a wall.
