Japanese Brushed Lacquer Lidded Fumibako Box
This is a Japanese resin letter box (fumibako). It is made of resin and created to mimic traditionally carved and lacquered wood in the kamakurabori style. This particular piece features persimmons with leaves and is mostly black with orange and green to highlight the design. The box is sturdy and relatively heavy despite its size.
Fumibako are traditionally used to store letters, small books, important documents, paper, and other stationary items.
It is also often used for Buddhist items, such as altar prayer books, prayer beads, charms, and for incense storage.
