Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features two men sitting. One man is serving a drink to another. One of the characters is possibly Ebisu or Hotei, both members of the Seven Lucky Gods and symbols of wealth. Several lucky symbols are painted such as a pine tree, a plum tree and a carp. This scroll is signed.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
