Vintage Japanese Chochin Lantern
This is a vintage Japanese paper lantern called chochin. It is made with thin, white washi paper with a thin bamboo frame lacquered in black. It compresses flat for storage. In black and red, it is decorated with big kanji that say "Nagara River" and "Gifu" as well as silhouettes of the famous cormorant fishing in Gifu Prefecture. The unique feature of this piece is that it's meant to be handheld. It comes with a black bamboo frame that fits on either end of the lantern to hold it open and provide a handle. There is also a small metal piece on the handle in case one wishes to hook it onto something.
