Vintage Japanese Porcelain Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese porcelain bell, or dorei. This bell is a miniature and made of kutani ware porcelain and is shaped like a classic bell in white and blue with painted flowers (plum blossom, peony, chrysanthemum). It has a thin red string with golf tassles tied to the top and a small white clay ball inside. There are three tiny bumps for legs to allow the bell to stand.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 3000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
