Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Drawer Table
This item comes from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This flat, square panel drawer is mostly coated in glossy classic black lacquer and would usually pull out of a butsudan to form a table, tray, or shelf. The top surface has a copper-gold colored abstract pattern and the front edge has bronze plate embellishments.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
Acquired in an estate sale in Gifu, Japan
