Vintage Japanese Wood Lacquered Base With Soft Pillow
This is a vintage Japanese neck rest or pillow called takamakura. This neck rest consists of a base made of lacquered wood on which sits a soft pillow made of silk. The base features a red, brown and gold marble design with some metal embellishments and the pillow is red with two white strings on the sides.
A neck rest, or Takamakura, is a support stand for the neck designed to keep hair intact while sleeping or resting and was used by the Japanese traditional female entertainers, the Geisha, to preserve their outstanding hair.

Good condition. Base: some lacquer peels, a crack in the lacquer (bottom), scratches and marks. Pillow: discolorations, stains, silk is worn, tear on the back. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
