Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting
This vintage Japanese shikishi art board is decorated with vivid color depictions of the Seven Lucky Gods. Each of the gods has their names written in black kanji as well as what they symbolize. There are two red stamp marks and and kanji for "good luck" at the top.
The Seven Lucky Gods (shichifukujin) personify good luck and fortune. In no particular order, the gods and their symbolisms include: Ebisu (integrity), Daikokuten (prosperity), Benzaiten (kindness), Bishamonten (dignity), Fukurokuju (popularity), Juroujin (longevity), and Hotei (magnanimity).
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
