Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting
This item is a Japanese shikishi art board. It is a printed reproduction of a picture of the Sai-e Hi-ougi of the Itsukushima shrine collections dating from Heian period. Hi-ougi are wooden fan. This particular fan (model for the photo) is painted and represents two characters dressed in Heian period style and some pine trees. This shikishi has a label on the back. It comes in a dedicated washi paper cover.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
