Antique Japanese Wood Lacquered Base Neck Pillow

This is an antique Japanese neck rest or pillow called takamakura. This neck rest consists of a oval, carved base made of lacquered wood. The pillow is made of red silk fabric in the chirimen style. The pillow is likely stuffed with dried rice hulls/husks, as it was a common stuffing material at the time.

A neck rest, or Takamakura, is a support stand for the neck designed to keep hair intact while sleeping or resting and was used by the Japanese traditional female entertainers, the Geisha, to preserve their outstanding hair.
