Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell or dorei. Shaped as a waniguchi, the gong that hang at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, it is dark brown and features a family crest on the front, and inscriptions at the back: Togyoan, a city in Yamaguchi prefecture. It has a small ball inside and a braided string tied at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
