Japanese Ceramic Komodaru Sake Barrel Bottle

This is a vintage Japanese sake bottle in the shape of a traditional komodaru sake barrel. Historically made of wood, komodaru were used as a means to transport sake during the Edo period. They are more often seen in modern day displayed at Shinto shrines as offerings to the gods (these special barrels are called kazaridaru) or during important ceremonies. This particular barrel is made of gray ceramic similar to typical kayoi-tokkuri sake bottles. It is wrapped in a straw mat and tied together with twine and rope for the iconic look. It has an opened hole on the back side bottom to facilitate pouring the sake.
