Vtg Japanese Military Uniform Puttees
This is a pair of vintage Japanese WWII military uniform puttees, also called makikyahan. They are long stretches of fabric with ties on one end, used to bind the legs from the ankle to the knee to protect them. These were a ubiquitous accessory for military uniforms worldwide during the First and Second World Wars.
Other forms of kyahan, or gaiters, were commonly used by workers, such as firemen and police, samurai, soldiers, nobility, and travelers, although usually in the form of a solid piece of fabric with ties. They were also used as padding underneath armor.
