Wooden boxes are a common method of safely keeping and storing delicate pottery, vases, and other ceramic, clay, and glass items in Japan. In addition to pottery, they are also widely used for a plethora of other traditional Japanese crafts including kimono accessories, wrapping cloths, chopsticks, commemorative gifts, etc. 

This is a vintage Japanese open wooden box. It is medium-sized and very sturdy and heavy. It is perfect for storing trinkets, craft supplies, tools, etc. It has no writing on it, so this box can also be used for DIY projects.
