Vintage Japanese Wooden Shrine Plaque, Ema

This vintage Japanese ema plaque has a picture of the Okadera temple, one of the temples of the Saikoku Kannon pilgrimage. It also includes other graphic elements such as a flower and some inscriptions. It has a golden braided cord.

Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto, and sometimes Buddhist shrines, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
