Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll  

This is a hand-crafted light brown wooden box made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits flush with the rest of the box for a uniform look. Inside are two non-adjustable carved brackets meant to secure a scroll in place.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it’s popular to add fuchin or scroll weights.
