Japanese kashigata are hand-carved wooden molds used to make higashi since the Edo period. Higashi is a broad category of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) and is a low-moisture treat made with soybean flour or rice flour, fine sugar, and other ingredients. These materials are packed tightly into kashigata molds and dried to create beautiful designs and shapes. Many of these sweets can be found in wagashi shops and grocery stores still today.

This wagashi kashigata stamp is made up of a thick block of wood with a carved design on one end. It features a simple kikkou/kikkoumon design, which is a traditional hexagonal pattern that resembles turtle shells.
