Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll  

Hand-crafted and in a medium brown color, this slender wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. This box features a sliding lid on the top. Inside of the box, there are two fixed wooden brackets used for securing a scroll in place. 

Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as tea houses and inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it’s popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
