Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll  

Hand-crafted and in a light brown color, this unique, sturdy, and slender wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits flush and securely on the top. It has two carved, wooden brackets inside to keep the scroll in place.

Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it’s popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
