Japanese Shikishi Art Board
This vintage Japanese shikishi art board features an oshie-zaiku (Japanese patchwork) design of a Gosho Ningyo (palace doll). These dolls with iconic chubby cheeks and child-like appearance were originally distributed within the Imperial Court in Kyoto as a highly prized gift that represents prosperity and luck. This particular character wears a flat hat and carries a branch of what appears to be wisteria. Oshie-zaiku gives a unique 3D appearance, and different textures and patterns of silk fabric, and the addition of hair and other materials adds extra dimension.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper: calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
