Vintage Japanese Porcelain Small Plate, Mamezara
This is a vintage Japanese small porcelain plate called mamezara. Mostly white, this ultra-thin plate has a blue sometsuke design of three Tang Dynasty children (called Karako in Japanese). This Chinese-themed motif was popular in the Edo period of Japan and well into the modern era. It symbolizes longevity and health for children.
Mamezara are tiny plates in a Japanese tableware set that typically hold dipping sauces such as soy sauce, garnishes, and other condiments. It is also the perfect size for holding small jewelry.
