Vintage Japanese Paper Uchiwa Fan
This is a Japanese paper fan or Uchiwa. Uchiwa is a traditional fan tool typically made of wood or bamboo and paper in a flat paddle-like shape. This particular fan is called “fukakusa”, a unique style of fan characterized by its tall and narrow shape. It features a scene from Kyoto’s famous mountain burning festival called Gozan no Okuribi which takes place at the end of the obon holiday on August 16th. The large “dai” kanji is the most viewed part of the festival and burns for 30-40 minutes. The image on the fan is ukiyoe-style. It comes with a short pamphlet detailing the events of this ceremony.
