Vtg Japanese Obijime Kimono Belt Accessory

This is a Japanese vintage obijime. A combination of simple beige and a multi-colored pattern, this narrow and round (marugumi) style traditionally braided kumihimo cord is flexible and easy to tie. It is made up on two separate pieces that knot together at the middle. Each piece has a large braid accent on the bottom with a tassel.

An obijime is a braided cord that wraps around the outside of the obi sash to keep it in shape. Because there are limitless colors, materials, and styles, they are often used as a decorative accent for kimonos in addition to their main function. Obijime is only used for women’s kimonos, not men’s kimonos.
