Vintage Japanese Natural Gourd Phallic Statue

This Japanese naturally dried hyotan gourd was grown and molded specifically into a phallic shape for decoration. It is adhered to a wooden stand. This item was likely a folk craft souvenir from the famous Hounen Festival in Komaki, Aichi Prefecture. Also called the “Penis Festival”, the matsuri takes place at Tagata Shrine every spring and is a celebration of fertility.
Hyotan as a whole, when not being used for storing sake, are considered luck charms for prosperity, good health, and success in business.
