This is a Japanese lacquered wooden letter box (ofumibako). It is traditionally used to store letters, small books, important documents, paper, and other stationary items.
It can also be used for Buddhist altar prayer books, prayer beads, charms, and for incense storage.
This classic brown shunkei-nuri lacquer piece is a beautiful decorative and functional addition to any home or office space. It features a simple lined design on the lid and inside is a unique floral fabric lining
