Antique Japanese Katagami Kimono Stencil Katazome 

Japanese Katagami is a stencil pattern for dyeing textiles used for printing designs and patterns on kimono and other fabric items.
Using traditional mulberry washi paper, this katagami stencil features a gorgeous depiction of a leaping shishi lion dog.

This antique Katagami was designed during the mid or late Edo period (1860) to early Meiji (1900) in Central Japan. It is made of two or more layers of handmade mulberry washi paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. Katagami printing uses a technique called resist dye where a paste is applied to the fabric with the katagami before dipping in ink. The open space on the katagami will be a negative space in the printed design.

• Good condition considering its age. Some tears in design. Some small pieces of Wear and tear due to age and use. Please see the photos.
