Vintage Iron Branding Stamp
This is a vintage cast iron branding stamp called yaki-in. This piece is meant to be placed over fire or coals and is used to mark wood, leather, fabrics, and most famously traditional Japanese sweets and snacks such as manju, dorayaki, senbei, etc. It is shaped like an old koban coin with calligraphy kanji characters at the center. It says “10,000 yen” (manryou 万両). Koban coins were used during the Edo period and while not used anymore, they continue to be a common motif in art, design, and advertising.
