Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (called kakejiku or makimono) features a small village with few houses, surrounded by trees, and plum trees bearing blossoms within the mountain. The scene is painted at dawn: the red sun rises between the mountains. This piece is signed with a name.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
