Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) represents two Hina dolls, the prince and the princess, with a sakura cherry tree at the back as well as a traditional decorative fabric. Usually, Hina dolls are displayed during Hinamatsuri, Girls’ Day. The border is a dark green floral pattern. This piece is signed and has a red seal. 

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
