Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features two colorful cranes standing under a pine tree. Two turtles are at the bottom. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. It has writings on the outside: this was a wedding gift.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake uses Zen words in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
