Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a colored mountain and water landscape. A high mountain can be seen on the top part of the piece, a waterfall in the middle, and a house and a river at the bottom. The whole scenery features trees and fog or clouds. The colors used are green, blue, brown, white and black. This piece is signed by Shuutei. 

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
