Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features an illustration of Kobo Daishi or Kukai, a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Shingon School of Buddhism. Kukai is surrounded by red seals (goshuin) from 88 sacred places in Shikoku.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
