Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu from Kochi. This dorei is in the shape of a raccoon dog (tanuki) tilting its head. The face and belly are painted, and a Japanese phrase is on the belly. There is a black clay ball inside, as well as a blue string and a paper tag tied at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
