Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei 

This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. This dorei is in the shape of a cute spotted reef crab (akamongani). It is a peach orange color with prominent red spots. One the back side is an impression of kanji that reveal this souvenir item is from the Ise Shima area in Mie Prefecture. There is a small white clay ball inside as well as a faded purple string tied at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.

• Good condition considering age. Some scuff marks and discolorations. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
