Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. It is in the shape of a working woman in Kimono, called Oharame from Kyoto. This particular one is mostly beige and blue. It has a small clay ball inside, a braided pink string attached, and a paper tag at the top.
Derei is a red string attached to the top, and there is a white clay ball inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
