Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei 

This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. It is in the shape of a monkey wearing a hat and clothes. It is dark brown with orange, black, white and red for the face and hat details. It has a white clay ball inside and a braided dark purple string cord tied at the top. According to the inscriptions on the back, this clay bell is an amulet to protect one’s house. 
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.

• Good condition considering age. Some scuff marks and discoloration. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
